PODCAST AROUND MIDNIGHT: EPISODE 2 / March 2010

Podcast Around Midnight

Ambient. Twisted. Experimental. Beautiful. That's what this episode is all about.

Welcome to the second show of Podcast Around Midnight - a mix of exotic electronic music.

The artists that agreed to exhibit their work on this podcast come from different backgrounds and different continents - but they share one thing in common - their sound is unique and unexpected, and it represents the spectrum of music that exists way beyond your MTV or local radio station. So if words like IDM, Dub or Glitch don't spook you - I hope you enjoy your stay. And if this is your first time with this type of music - get ready to open your ears, for this is surely going to be a new and exciting experience.

Thanks once again to all the artists who contributed their material for the show.

Hope you enjoy it,

Alex

TRACKLIST

1) on twitter Synoiz - Andromeda - (Ambients) - 2009

Synoiz is a one-man project based in the North East of England. Originally setting out to create his own brand of angst-ridden synthpop, Synoiz found himself much more involved in ambient soundtrack work.

Preceded by his debut single "Long Lost…" in June, on Halloween 2009, Synoiz released his debut album "Ambients" for digital download and a limited physical run. Combining stirring organic pieces with nightmarish horror soundscapes akin to those of Silent Hill, Ambients makes the perfect soundtrack as the nights get darker and the winds colder towards the end of the year.

The full album "Ambients" is coming soon on CD + download through http://synoiz.bandcamp.com

2) on twitter Von Hash aka DMT - Genetic Interference - (Genetic Interference) - 1997

Who is Von Hash?

There are rumours, hearsay, whispers. There is talk of a vast arsenal of sonic weaponry, a mind melting collection of synthesisers, modules and effects, collected over a career spanning 31 years, a hundred different names and a thousand different productions.

Some say he came from England, a few say from the North. Some mention Back 2 Basics, The Warehouse, Kaos, Soak. Others say London and recall Brixton, Shoom, The Rocket and Astoria. It's a known fact he currently resides on Ibiza, the island he considers his true home.

One thing is for sure if you asked him he'd just say:

"It's all about the music..."

3) on twitter Animus Invidious with Polychromatic - Triangular Joint - (Laboratory Porpoises) - 2009

Animus Invidious began playing with a cheesy 1.5-octave casio keyboard at a young age, imagining himself a synthesizer player. Heavily influenced by the music of mannheim steamroller, oldies, classical, video games, metal, rock, and underground electronica, he fiddled with various guitars and computer programs and began to unearth various methods of transferring the bizarre imaginings that noodled around in his noggin on/in-to an accessibly audible format. The result which you hear is a slew of various genres mashed together into a psychedelically hard soft soup of definition-defying dreaminess.

This is an older colab with a good friend, Polychromatic. It was on a previous release too, but it just seemed to fit with everything else on Laboratory Porpoises and seemed quite happy in its slot.
Notice the triangular beat structure and imagine geometric structures sculpted to the sound as you listen to this song.

4) on twitter The Ancient Tapes - Art is Love (unreleased)

The Ancient Tapes story started about 3 years ago. When a Littleton, Colorado native decided to make some tunes. Not just any old songs, he remembers recalling ones that make you think, ones that make you cry, ones that make staring out into space enjoyable.

5) on twitter Alex Hudish - The Garden - (One, unreleased)

Music in general is really simple. A great part of my life has been dedicated to describing different things and themes in sound. I haven't skipped any musical genre on my way to where I am today. I've been fond of soft and hard rock, Irish and Balkan folk, as well as trip hop and club music. What made me stop on lounge electronica were mostly fresh European acts. I fell in love with the intelligent, mellow grooves of the French duo Air, Icelandic enigmas Sigur Ros and Mum, enchanting Norwegians Royksopp and The Knife and many more.

I think I found what I've always been looking for in music-making: to make simple music people would enjoy without asking questions, music to make you fall in love over and over again... wake up on the right side of the bed... smile for no good reason... just because we can.

6) Polychromatic - A City Lost - (Storytime) - 2010

4th generation Italian from New York, Brandon DiMaggio (aka: Polychromatic, pchrome, polychrome) moved to the dry desert of the American southwest to escape all audio distractions that big cities produce. Here is where he honed his ears, production skills and met fellow travelling musicians, only to one day return to civilization and share his experiences with all…

In 2006 he was one of the first to join the Gnostic Elevator collective along with Phat Kid and Animus Invidious. Polychromatic has since gone into hiding to take a break to rethink his approach to music.

7) on twitter infraBuse - A State of Mind - (A State of Mind EP) - 2010

infraBuse is a one man musical project with roots in Antwerp, Belgium. Neo, the man behind it,comes from a rock-oriented background, but realised around 2005 that he could have a lot more fun with music software, not to mention total artistic freedom. What initially started as a casual experimenting with sounds, synths and samples, slowly grew into something a bit more devoted. A first product arrived in 2006, when a 5-track EP called "Simple Shapes and Patterns" was put out and released on the twin labels Metropublic and Retropublic. Also some remixes were done, including the B-sides of the singles of Canadian industrial metalband Rise of the Fallen and that of Latvian new-wave band StandART. Another collab was a co-production with Dutch rapper Omi for his debut album in 2007.

This leads us to the present day. Neo, who took a 3-year break from producing, decided to pick the skill back up around June 2009 which is unfolding into a second release, scheduled for the beginning of 2010- called “A state of Mind EP”: a sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and complex rhythms. With influences from experimental hiphop, broken beat and dubstep, infraBuse has grown, taking a next step in its evolution towards crafting its own form of futuristic glitch hop. With a nod toward the resurgence in the instrumental hip-hop “beats” movement, as well as the still growing dubstep “bass”-oriented culture, infraBuse has this time injected a bigger sense of dance sensibility into the music, in an effort to craft its own niche with a new school dance floor sound. Neo is planning on putting a full album out around the summer of 2010, featuring tracks from the new EP, as well as guest performances and remixes.

8) on twitter Malaventura - Afroelectrico(Inner Planets Vol.5: Earth/Tierra) - 2010

Malaventura is an audiovisual artist from the south of Spain (based in Fuengirola, Malaga) and his work range from the sonic experimentation to the Videoart creation and live performances. His music puts together the classic and minimal contemporary legacy with the new sounds and styles like IDM, Electro, Glitches and noises.

This track is taken from the final volume of the Inner Planets series [...] Welcome to Earth. Bienvenido a la Tierra.
